Same Story, Different Paintings

같은 이야기, 다른 그림들

We often find different paintings 

with the same subject.

우리는 종종 같은 주제를 지닌

다른 그림들을 발견한다.

 

An example is The Flight of Icarus 

by Henri Matisse 

and The Fall of Icarus by Marc Chagall.

하나의 예는 헨리 마티스의

'이카로스의 비행'과

마크 샤갈의 '이카로스의 추락'이다.

 

They are both about the same Greek myth.

그것들은 둘 다

같은 그리스 신화에 관한 것이다.

 

The Greek Myth of Icarus

이카로스의 그리스 신화

 

 

Daedalus was a great inventor.

다이달로스는 훌륭한 발명가였다.

 

★King Minos liked Daedalus’ work so much 

that he wanted to keep Daedalus 

with him forever.

미노스 왕은 다이달로스의 작품들을

너무 좋아해서

다이달로스를 영원히 데리고 있고자 했다.

 

Daedalus, however, tried to leave, 

so the King kept him and his son, 

Icarus, in a tall tower.

하지만 다이달로스는 떠나고자 노력했고,

그래서 왕은 그와 그의 아들인 이카로스를

높은 탑에 가두었다.

 

Daedalus wanted to escape.

다이달로스는 탈출하고자 했다.

 

One day, Daedalus saw birds flying.

어느 날,

다이달로스는 날고 있는 새들을 보았다.

 

"Wings! I need wings!" he shouted.

"날개! 나는 날개가 필요해!"

그는 소리쳤다.

Daedalus then gathered bird feathers 

and glued them together with wax.

그리고 나서 다이달로스는

새의 깃털을 모았고,

그것들을 밀랍으로 함께 붙였다.

 

★When the wings were ready,

 he warned his son,

날개들이 준비가 되었을 때,

그는 그의 아들에게 경고했다.

 

“Don’t fly too close to the sun.

The wax will melt.”

"너무 태양에 가까이 날지 마라.

밀랍이 녹을 것이다."

 

Daedalus and Icarus began to fly.

다이달로스와 이카로스는

날기를 시작했다.

 

★Icarus was so excited

that he forgot his father’s warning.

이카로스는 너무 들떠서

그의 아버지가 경고한 것을 잊어버렸다.

 

He flew higher and higher,

and the wax began to melt.

그는 점점 더 높이 날았고,

밀랍은 녹기 시작했다.

 

“Oh, no! I’m falling,” Icarus cried out.

"오, 안 돼! 내가 떨어지고 있어,"

이카로스는 울부짖었다.

 

Icarus fell into the sea and died.

이카로스는 바다로 떨어져 죽었다.

 

Two different Paintings

Matisse and Chagall both deal with

the same subject in their paintings,

but they are different.

두 개의 다른 그림들

마티세와 샤갈은

둘 다 그들의 그림들에서

같은 주제를 다루지만,

그것들은 다르다.

 

★First, in Matisse’s painting,

you can see Icarus flying,

but in Chagall’s painting, the boy is falling.

★This difference comes from

the different ideas

that the two painters had about Icarus.

Matisse thought that Icarus was brave

and adventurous.

In contrast, Chagall thought 

that Icarus was foolish.

Second, Matisse’s painting is very simple, 

but Chagall’s painting has many details.

둘째로, 마티세의 그림은 아주 단순하지만, 

샤갈의 그림에는 세부적인 것들이 많다.

 

In Matisse’s painting, 

there are only Icarus and some stars.

마티세의 그림에는, 

오직 이카로스와 몇몇 별들만이 있다.

 

Furthermore, 

Icarus’ body has just a simple outline.

게다가, 

이카로스의 몸은 단지 

단순한 윤곽을 가지고 있다.

 

★In contrast, 

Chagall painted many people 

and houses in addition to Icarus.

반대로, 

샤갈은 이카로스에 대해서 

많은 사람들과 집들을 그렸다.

 

This difference comes from 

the different painting styles 

of the two painters.

이 차이는 두 화가들의 서로 다른 

화풍에서 기인한다.

because they may see 

the same thing in different ways.

사람들은 같은 것을
