분사구문

1. 구조

분사는 다른 단어들과 결합하여 분사 구문을 만들 수 있습니다.

There’s a woman crying her eyes out over there.
Most of the people invited to the reception were old friends.
Not knowing what to do, I telephoned the police.
Served with milk and sugar, it makes a delicious breakfast.

 

2. 명사 뒤에서: 축약된 관계절

분사 구문은 명사 뒤에 사용될 수 있습니다.

We can offer you a job cleaning cars.
In came the first runner, closely followed by the second.

분사 구문은 종종 관계절과 매우 유사하지만,

동사 대신 분사가 있다는 점에서 차이가 있습니다.

Who’s the girl dancing with your brother?
(= ...the girl who is dancing...)
Anyone touching that wire will get a shock. (= Anyone who touches...)
There’s Neville, eating as usual.
Half of the people invited to the party didn’t turn up.
I found him sitting at a table covered with papers.

완료 분사는 이 방식으로 자주 사용되지 않습니다.

Do you know anybody who’s lost a cat?
(NOT Do you know anybody having lost a cat?)

3. 부사절

분사 구문은 조건, 이유, 시간 관계, 결과 등을 표현하는

완전한 부사절과 유사하게 사용될 수 있습니다.

(물론, 조건이나 이유가 너무 명확하여 완전한 부사절이 필요하지 않은 경우에만 가능합니다.)

부사적 분사절은 보통 공식적인 문체에서 사용됩니다.

Used economically, one tin will last for six weeks. (= If it is used…)
Having failed my medical exams, I took up teaching. (= As I had failed…)
Putting down my newspaper, I walked over to the window.
(= After I had put down my newspaper…)
It rained for two weeks on end, completely ruining our holiday.
(= …so that it completely ruined our holiday.)

have, wish 그리고 know와 같은 동사와 함께 -ing 절을 만들 수 있다는 점에 주목해야합니다.

이 경우, 분사절은 주로 이유나 원인을 나타냅니다.

Being unable to help in any other way, I gave her some money.
Not wishing to continue my studies, I decided to become a dress designer.
Knowing her pretty well, I realised something was wrong.

 

4. 주어와 잘못 연결된 분사

보통 부사적 분사절의 주어는 문장의 주절의 주어와 같습니다.

My wife had a long talk with Sally, explaining why she didn’t want the children to play together.
(내 아내가 설명의 주어입니다.)

주절의 주어와 다른 주어가 있는 분사절을 만드는 것은 종종 오류로 간주됩니다. 

다음 문장처럼, 주어가 맞지 않는 '잘못 연결된 분사' (또는 '걸려 있는', '매달린' 분사)는 

많은 사람들에 의해 잘못된 것으로 간주될 수 있습니다.

Looking out of the window of our hotel room, there was a wonderful range of mountains.
(이 문장은 마치 산들이 창 밖을 내다보고 있는 것처럼 들릴 수 있습니다.)

그러나 '잘못 연결된 분사'가 있는 문장들은 흔히 자연스럽게 느껴지며, 

특히 주절이 준비구문 it 또는 there를 주어로 가질 때 더욱 그렇습니다.

Being French, it’s surprising that she’s such a terrible cook.
Having so little time, there was not much that I could do.

'잘못 연결된 분사'는 화자의 태도를 나타내는 표현에서 일반적입니다. 

예시:

Generally speaking, men can run faster than women.
Broadly speaking, dogs are more faithful than cats.
Judging from his expression, he’s in a bad mood.
Considering everything, it wasn’t a bad holiday.
Supposing there was a war, what would you do?
Taking everything into consideration, they ought to get another chance.

 

5. 분사절이 자체 주어를 가지는 경우

분사절은 자체 주어를 가질 수 있습니다.

이는 대개 공식적인 문체에서 가장 자주 발생합니다.

Nobody having any more to say, the meeting was closed.
All the money having been spent, we started looking for work.
A little girl walked past, her doll dragging behind her on the pavement.
Hands held high, the dancers circled to the right.

 

주어는 종종 동반 상황을 나타내는 절일 때 with로 시작됩니다.

A car roared past with smoke pouring from the exhaust.

With Peter working in Birmingham, and Lucy travelling most of the week,

the house seems pretty empty.

 

6. 접속사와 전치사 뒤에 오는 분사구문

분사구문은 많은 접속사와 전치사 뒤에 사용할 수 있습니다.

여기에는 after, before, since, when, while, whenever, once, until, on, without, instead of, in spite of

그리고 as 등이.

-ing 형태는 전치사 뒤에서 종종 분사나 동명사로 간주될 수 있습니다.

이 둘의 경계는 명확하지 않습니다. 

After talking to you I always feel better.
After having annoyed everybody he went home.
Depress clutch before changing gear.
She’s quite different since coming back from America.
When telephoning from abroad, dial 865, not 0865.
Once deprived of oxygen, the brain dies.
Leave in oven until cooked to a light brown colour.
On being introduced, British people often shake hands.
They left without saying goodbye.
She struck me as being a very nervy kind of person.

7. 목적보어

목적어 + 분사(구) 구조는 감각 동사 (예: see, hear, feel, watch, notice, smell)와

다른 동사들 (예: find, get, have, make) 뒤에 사용됩니다.

I saw a small girl standing in the goldfish pond.
Have you ever heard a nightingale singing?
I found her drinking my whisky.
We’ll have to get the car repaired before Tuesday.
Do you think you can get the radio working?
We’ll soon have you walking again.
I can make myself understood pretty well in English.
